Sustainability: Why real leather and what to look out for
Genuine leather is rightly polarizing. However, if you value durability, repairability, and natural materials, you can hardly avoid vegetable-tanned full-grain leather. Instead of "tiring" with time, it gains character: patina instead of plastic abrasion, robustness instead of a throwaway cycle. You can read here what truly matters in terms of responsibility and how Lunero addresses the issue.
1) Leather in its life cycle: Durability & Repairability
Leather products can last for decades – unlike many modern synthetic materials, which need to be replaced more quickly. By being repairable or maintainable, you minimize resource consumption. A product that lasts ten years instead of two saves raw materials, energy, and transport.
2) Vegetable Tanning Explained (Tannins, Patina)
Vegetable tanning uses natural tanning agents (tannins) that treat the leather gently. The result: Veg-tan full-grain leather that develops an individual patina over time. This "liveliness" clearly distinguishes it from coated or pigmented leathers.
3) Leather vs. Synthetics: Microplastics & Aging
While many synthetic materials release microplastics through abrasion, genuine leather is usually free from this problem. In addition, synthetic materials often age visibly faster – fading, tearing, or losing structure. Leather, on the other hand, gains with time.
4) Transparency at Lunero (Material, Manufacturing, Fairness)
At Lunero, we use full-grain cowhide, manufacture with partner workshops, rely on YKK zippers and cotton lining – quality that you can see and feel. Fair working conditions and durable workmanship are not an option for us, but standard.
5) Checklist: How do you recognize responsible leather?
-
Full-grain specified?
-
Vegetable-tanned or at least transparently noted?
-
YKK zipper or branded component?
-
High-quality lining (e.g., cotton) instead of thin polyester?
-
Manufacturer discloses origin & processing?
If the answers are "Yes" – then there's a lot to suggest that you're getting a durable and valuable product.
By choosing genuine leather, you are not only opting for style but also for sustainability in the best sense: less consumption, more quality, longer use. If you want to know more about care or everyday use – check out our other posts.
